SOLIDWORKS is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) application used for building mechatronics systems. A very close comparison is AutoCAD, but unlike AutoCAD which focuses more on general-purpose 2D and 3D drawings, SOLIDWORKS is mostly used for developing more sophisticated 3D models and simulations.

SOLIDWORKS is used for planning, visual ideation, modeling, feasibility assessment, and prototyping, as well as for designing and building mechanical, electrical, and software elements. SOLIDWORKS is a paid software, but there is a way to get it for free.

How to Download and Install SOLIDWORKS on Your PC for Free

  1. Click on the download button on the sidebar to go directly to the official SOLIDWORKS download page.
  2. Hit the “Try now” button and follow the instructions to go to the sign-up page.
  3. Click Sign Up and enter your information to create your SOLIDWORKS ID.

  4. You will be required to verify your email. You can do this by clicking the link sent to you via email.
  5. After the verification, you will be prompted to go back to SOLIDWORKS main page. Click the Log In button to log into your new account.

  6. You will be redirected to the Login page where you can login using your newly-created ID.

  7. Agree to the privacy policy and hit the Launch button. The launch may take several minutes.

  8. Note that once you close your browser without saving or exporting your projects, you might lose them.

How to delete my SOLIDWORKS accounts

Since the software is not installed directly on your PC, you only need to cancel your subscription or delete your account. You can delete your accounts from the CAD Admin dashboard:

  1. In your dashboard, go to the left of the Status column and select the accounts you want to delete in the Account Selection column.
  2. Click Delete Accounts.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion. Note that your account will be removed from SOLIDWORKS and you will lose your work.
