10 Best VPNs in 2020: Tested All Apps, Speed, Security & More

Chase Williams Last Updated by Chase Williams on October 28, 2020

You’ll find hundreds of VPNs on the internet claiming to be the best. But how can they all be the fastest, safest, or most budget-friendly choice? Here’s what most providers don’t want you to know: Not every VPN is telling the truth.

To get a conclusive (and honest) answer, my team and I carefully tested 157 VPNs over the course of 3 months and shortlisted the top 10 VPNs in the market. Every VPN underwent rigorous rounds of real-life testing in order to meet the below criteria:

  • Fast speeds with a global network of servers
  • Strong security and privacy features, including a no-logs policy and powerful encryption to break through firewalls and censorship
  • The ability to unblock popular sites like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, and more
  • Anonymous torrenting and P2P support
  • Dedicated apps for major operating systems and devices (Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, Amazon Fire Stick, and more)

I was disappointed to discover that most VPNs aren’t even close to what they promised on their websites. Some shouldn’t even be marketing themselves as a VPN. On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised to find that NordVPN took the lead as the best VPN on the list. Despite its low price, I was impressed with its winning combination of high-speed servers, advanced security measures, and user-friendly apps — and so I chose it as the #1 VPN of 2020.

In a Rush? Here’s a Quick Summary of the Best VPNs in 2020

  1. NordVPN — #1 VPN with the fastest speeds, strong security, and 5,600+ global servers for unblocking content. Includes a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  2. ExpressVPN — Highly-secure VPN with advanced privacy features and military-grade encryption to protect your device, but slightly more expensive than NordVPN.
  3. Surfshark — Budget VPN with an unlimited number of device connections supported, but “Fastest Server” quick connect is faulty.
  4. CyberGhost — Premium VPN for fast streaming and secure torrenting for desktop users, but mobile apps for Android and iOS are more limited.
  5. Private Internet Access (PIA) — Best for advanced users due to customizable network, privacy, and security settings, but can’t reliably unblock streaming services like Netflix US.

NordVPN emerged as the best all-round VPN for 2020 due to its winning combination of premium features. This includes thousands of high-speed servers around the world, powerful security measures, and user-friendly apps — all at a price that few competitors can match.

Many VPNs can significantly slow down your device, so I was surprised when NordVPN offered excellent speeds on every server I tested. Even when I connected to servers in Australia (over 14,000km away!), my speeds were still over 36Mbps, which is more than fast enough to stream in Ultra HD and torrent large files quickly.

Screenshots of NordVPN connected to different global servers and Ookla speed tests

Every NordVPN server I tested had fast connection speeds

There are over 5,500 servers in 59 countries, so you’re always guaranteed a fast connection as you don’t have to compete with other users for available servers. The native app makes it easy to find the fastest server too — just click the “Quick connect” button on the top right corner and the best server will be automatically selected for you. Alternatively, you can choose a specific location on the map interface (click once) or select a country from the server list (click on the country name and then the “Quick connect” button on the pop-up tab).

Screenshot of NordVPN's Quick Connect button that automatically connects you to the fastest available server

NordVPN offers 5,500+ servers but the “Quick connect” button finds the best server for you

It only takes a couple of clicks to connect to a server, and then you can start streaming, torrenting, or browsing the internet securely.

I was particularly impressed with the high performance of every server I tested. Just because a VPN has thousands of servers doesn’t mean they all work. Servers can still struggle to unblock local sites — and some can even fail to connect completely. However, I easily unblocked Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and HBO Max on multiple servers in the US and UK.

But I wanted to really put NordVPN to the test. So I also tried connecting to Netflix Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Japan — and I was successful every time. Not many providers can consistently get around Netflix’s VPN ban on the first attempt, so I was very happy with NordVPN’s performance.

I connected to NordVPN and watched Netflix US from my physical location in the UK

It’s not only streaming that NordVPN does well. If you’re a fan of torrenting, you can choose from thousands of fast P2P servers on the native app. These P2P servers work with all major torrenting clients, like qBitTorent and Transmission, and can easily access restricted torrent sites like The Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents. I confirmed this in my tests when I securely torrented a whopping 90GB gaming file in less than 4 hours.

I recommend connecting to NordVPN’s optimized P2P servers when torrenting

When you use a VPN, you’re entrusting it with access to your private browsing activities — and some of these activities can be highly sensitive. Fortunately, I’m happy to report that NordVPN takes data protection very seriously and this is reflected in its privacy policy and software infrastructure.

NordVPN has a strict no-logs policy and it doesn’t store any personal or identifying data while you’re connected to the VPN. It even went to the effort of inviting global auditing firm PwC to review and verify its no-logs claims. This clear display of transparency is exactly what you want to see from a VPN company.

In terms of security, NordVPN uses military-grade encryption to keep your data protected at all times. Even when you’re switching between servers (or if you unexpectedly have a connection drop), there’s a kill switch that ensures none of your data is accidentally exposed. As an extra safety precaution, I also ran leak tests to see if my IP address was truly kept private — and NordVPN passed every test. My real location in the UK was never exposed to any websites or apps that I visited.

NordVPN has in-built leak protection to hide IP addresses from other websites and apps

But you don’t have to take my word for it. You can try out NordVPN for 30 days risk-free by using its money-back guarantee, and see how well it works on your own device. If you’re not completely satisfied, you can get a hassle-free refund by chatting to the customer support team over 24/7 live chat.

To make sure you can really get your money back, I tested this myself. I signed up for NordVPN at a bargain price after finding its hidden deals page. After using the service for 3 weeks, I requested a refund from the customer support team over 24/7 live chat. It only took a minute to get my refund approved and I got a full refund within 5 days.

Try ExpressVPN for free for 30 days!

ExpressVPN is the best choice if you want a highly-secure VPN with maximum encryption and privacy protection features. You’ll have the freedom to browse the internet anonymously, while overcoming any firewalls, censorship, and other online restrictions. In fact, ExpressVPN is one of the very few VPNs that still work in China and can get around the government’s tough internet regulations!

As soon as you connect to a server, your internet traffic is secured with AES 256-bit encryption. This level of encryption is unbreakable, and is used by militaries and governments worldwide to hide confidential information. There’s no risk of your IP address accidentally leaking out either — I ran tests for IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks (this is how some websites and apps can track your device and physical location) and I found zero leaks.

Screenshot of ExpressVPN successfully passing an IP, WebRTC, and DNS leak test while connected to a server in the US

ExpressVPN has in-built leak protection that safely masks your real IP address

Even if your connection is ever unstable, you’re protected by a kill switch that automatically blocks all internet traffic until you’ve safely reconnected to a server.

As a bonus protective measure, ExpressVPN even uses a unique feature called TrustedServer technology to automatically erase all server data with every reboot. Many VPN providers perform this task manually — but you never know how often it occurs. As ExpressVPN automates this process each time its servers are powered on and off, any existing data has a much lower risk of being compromised between erasures.

With such an impressive set of security measures, I wasn’t surprised that ExpressVPN claims to have a strict no-logs policy. But you can never tell how strict a VPN’s no-logs policy truly is — many free VPNs claim to uphold this policy but still collect some data anyway. However, I’m completely reassured with ExpressVPN as it actually had its no-logs policy verified and proven to be true. Turkish authorities previously attempted to retrieve user data from ExpressVPN’s servers but there was nothing to be found. This proves that ExpressVPN never keeps logs of your personal data, browsing history, or any kind of identifiable information.

As a result, I feel perfectly safe using ExpressVPN to browse sensitive topics online, download unlimited torrent files, and unblock restricted streaming services. I especially like that all servers support torrenting and streaming — some providers require you to connect to specialty servers, but not ExpressVPN. I could choose from all 3,000 servers in over 94 countries, which is the most server locations out of any VPN I’ve tested.

No matter which server you connect to, you can expect consistently fast speeds. From my location in the UK, I ran speed tests on multiple servers in the US, Japan, and France. My download speeds were always over 30Mbps, which is impressive considering that Japan is almost 10,000km away from me. I didn’t have any issues torrenting large files, playing online games, and streaming shows and movies in Ultra HD.

Screenshots of ExpressVPN connected to different servers and Ookla speed tests

ExpressVPN’s speeds were fast and impressively consistent on its global servers

During my tests, I was particularly pleased with how well I could stream Netflix, since it’s notoriously difficult for VPNs to unblock. The fastest server for me was the USA–New York server, and I watched the film The Irishman in Ultra HD with only a couple of seconds of buffering.

Screenshot of ExpressVPN streaming The Irishman on Netflix
I connected to ExpressVPN and streamed Netflix US in Ultra HD from the UK

I could also successfully stream Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max on multiple US servers. For Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, I tested some additional UK servers, which all worked perfectly (I got the best speeds on the London and East London servers).

While ExpressVPN’s regular plans can be slightly expensive, I found this hidden page with super low prices. You don’t have to commit to a subscription straight away though — in fact, I recommend you try ExpressVPN risk-free for 30 days with its money-back guarantee first. If you change your mind, you won’t even need to provide a reason as it’s a “no questions asked” refund policy.

To make sure this was really the case, I created an account with ExpressVPN and requested a refund 3 weeks later. And it was surprisingly easy to get my money back! I wasn’t pressured to stay and I didn’t have to provide a reason for leaving. In fact, my refund was processed straight away and I got a full refund in 5 days.

Try Surfshark for free for 30 days!

Surfshark is a budget-friendly VPN with the cheapest monthly price on this list. It offers even better value when you share a subscription between family and friends, as you can connect an unlimited number of devices to a single Surfshark account. There are 15 devices in my household, so it’s a relief to know that I can secure them all without having to pay for multiple VPN plans.

When I first tested Surfshark, I was a little suspicious about its claim to support an unlimited number of devices. What you’ll often find is that speeds significantly slow down when you connect more devices to the VPN. But I was surprised — Surfshark’s speeds remained fast even when I connected 3 devices at once. I conducted all tests on servers in the UK, which is also where I’m based. I first connected my Windows laptop and ran a speed test. Then I connected my iPhone XS and iPad, and ran the speed test again. My speed dropped by 20%, which is a very small decrease and won’t make a huge impact on your overall speeds.

Screenshot of speed difference between 1 device connected and 3 devices connected.

Surfshark supports an unlimited number of devices but speeds will slow down

This is good news if your household enjoys streaming as you won’t have to worry about significant drops in quality. Most households have an average speed of 20Mbps. If 3 people are streaming at the same time, speeds will slightly lower to 16Mbps — which is still fast enough for HD quality videos.

Everyone connected to the Surfshark account can stream Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, and more. I unblocked every streaming site on my first attempt when I connected to servers in the US and UK.

screenshot of Kims convenience playing on netflix with Surfshark
I streamed a full episode of the show Kim’s Convenience on Netflix US in HD.

Torrenting is also an option with specialty P2P servers available. You don’t even have to manually connect to these P2P servers. When you launch a torrenting client like qBittorent or PopcornTime, Surfshark will automatically reroute you to the closest P2P server. I tested this feature and it only took 2 seconds to switch servers.

My biggest frustration with Surfshark was its faulty “Fastest server” feature. I ran a few tests comparing my server speeds when connected via the “Fastest server” feature vs. manually selecting a server from the list. Unfortunately, I was able to manually connect to a faster server 50% of the time. If you want the best possible speeds, I suggest choosing a server from the list yourself. There’s a circle icon that shows you how full each server is — make sure to select a server with less users for the best speed.

Screenshot of Surfshark's server list displaying server load

It’s a hassle but I suggest manually connecting to a server in order to get the fastest speeds

That being said, there’s no harm if you want to download Surfshark and try it out for yourself. Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can test every feature before you commit to a subscription. If you like it, Surfshark offers excellent value for money at only $2.49 each month (and it could cost even less if you use a coupon to get a discount). It’s a great choice if you have a larger household as you can protect everyone’s devices at the same time.

No optimized P2P servers available on iOS or Android apps

CyberGhost makes streaming and torrenting easy by offering a range of optimized servers. All optimized servers have been automatically configured for the best possible speeds and performance, so you don’t need to set up anything manually — just simply connect.

You can find CyberGhost’s streaming servers by clicking the “For streaming” tab in the app. Every server has been optimized for a specific streaming service, so you’re always guaranteed a working connection. Personally, I think this is a standout feature — I’ve tested many VPNs where I’ve had to connect to multiple servers in order to find a single server that works. CyberGhost has removed that risk entirely by only displaying servers proven to work.

Screenshot of CyberGhost's optimized streaming servers on the Windows app

CyberGhost makes it easy to choose the right server for your streaming service

I confirmed this when I tested servers optimized for Netflix US, Disney, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, and HBO. My connection was successful every time — I could start streaming almost immediately and my video quality was always Ultra HD, with average speeds between 28Mbps to 30Mbps.

Screenshot of CyberGhost streaming The Irishman on Netflix
I easily accessed Netflix US from my location in the UK with CyberGhost

The full list of optimized servers includes streaming giants like Netflix UK, Netflix Japan, YouTube TV, NBC, ESPN+, Sling TV, and Crunchyroll, plus smaller services like Yle.

The optimized servers for torrenting have a similar setup. By clicking on the “For torrenting” tab (called “For downloading” on the Mac and iOS apps), I was presented with a list of servers that support P2P file-sharing and Bittorrent. I selected the Belgium server as it’s the closest distance to me with a low number of users and low percentage load. All these factors will result in faster speeds — which was proven when my 2GB file finished downloading in less than 9 minutes.

Screenshot of CyberGhost's optimized torrenting server menu on the Windows app

Fast servers have a low load percentage, low number of users, and are close to your physical location

But when it comes to torrenting, it’s not always about fast speeds. Strong security and privacy measures are crucial, especially if you live in a country where P2P activity is discouraged or banned. This is where CyberGhost performs exceptionally well. Your online activities are protected by a strict zero-logs policy and secured with 256-bit AES encryption. This is the strongest encryption standard available today and used by governments worldwide. In the app, you’ll also find settings to turn on blocking for ads, trackers, and malware, which is particularly useful when browsing torrent sites.

In addition, CyberGhost has an automatic kill switch to ensure your IP address and personal data is never exposed, even if the VPN connection becomes unstable. However, I would’ve liked to see more unique torrenting-friendly features. For instance, NordVPN and ExpressVPN support torrenting on their iOS and Android apps, but CyberGhost has removed its torrenting-optimized servers from its mobile apps.

I recommend CyberGhost primarily for Windows, Mac, and Linux desktop users, especially since these native apps outperform the competition in terms of streaming and torrenting. It’s a bargain price at only $2.75 per month for the 3-year plan, and you can get an even bigger discount when you check this hidden coupon page! If you’re not sure about locking yourself into a long-term subscription — don’t worry. It’s risk-free to test out CyberGhost with its 45-day money-back guarantee and try out every feature. If you’re not satisfied or you simply don’t want to continue with the service, you can request a full refund from customer support. No questions will be asked.

5. Private Internet Access (PIA) — Best for Advanced Users With Customizable Security Settings

Quick Look: PIA Results

Speed Average — Inconsistent speeds depending on server location
Security Advanced — Military-grade encryption, kill switch, leak protection, and blocker for ads, trackers and malware
Privacy Strict — Based in the US (inside the 5/9/14 Eyes) with proven no-logs policy
Native apps for Most main devices — Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux
Proven to unblock All major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Sling TV, fuboTV, CBS All Access, and more
Torrenting Supported — All 2,900+ servers in the network support P2P
Customer support Quick response 24/7 via live chat, online form, and email
Device connections 10
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Minor cons Not every server unblocks Netflix US or Hulu
No ad blocker or OpenVPN protocol on iOS app
Best price $2.69/month (1-year subscription + 2 months free)

Try PIA for free for 30 days!

November 2020 Black Friday Special: PIA has dropped prices for a limited time to a crazy $2.69 per month for the 2-year plan (you can save up to 73%)! Even better, you get 2 extra months completely free! This is a limited offer so be sure to grab it now before it's gone. See more information on this offer here.

Private Internet Access (PIA) offers advanced privacy and security features that you can tailor to your own needs. You can find a multitude of customization options on the native Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac apps.

For example, you can choose which data encryption standards you want to implement: AES-128, AES-256, or no encryption at all (although your login details will still be encrypted and your IP address remains hidden). I recommend AES-256 encryption as it’s virtually unbreakable — but it’s nice to have the option to choose faster speeds in return for lower levels of encryption. What’s more rare is that you even have control over the handshake encryption, which is used to establish a secure connection with PIA itself. There are 6 options in total, and includes RSA and ECC.

Screenshot of Private Internet Access VPN and its app for Mac displaying the Connection tab's customization options

PIA’s native app offers customizable options that I haven’t seen in any other VPN

But if you’re truly privacy-conscious, what you’ll really be concerned about is PIA’s headquarters in the US. The US is a founding member of the 5 Eyes intelligence-sharing network. You’ll find this isn’t the case for providers like NordVPN, which is located in Panama. Although I was initially concerned, I was quickly reassured after finding out that PIA’s no-logs policy has actually been tested and proven (similar to ExpressVPN).

The Russian government previously seized PIA’s servers but was unable to recover any user data, so I’m confident that the strict no-logs policy is being honored. Plus shortly after this incident, Russia passed a new law mandating that every VPN provider keep traffic logs. As a direct consequence, PIA withdrew its servers from the country. I’m happy to see that PIA went to such impressive lengths to protect its customers’ data.

Screenshot of Private Internet Access VPN's website with a blog post describing the reason behind PIA's withdrawal from Russia

PIA released a transparent update about its decision to withdraw from Russia

PIA’s commitment to privacy makes it a good option for anonymous browsing (it’s compatible with Tor) and safe torrenting. Every server allows P2P file-sharing and the use of BitTorrent, which is convenient as you don’t have to limit yourself to specific servers.

Unfortunately, PIA does slightly underperform when it comes to streaming. Hulu was extremely slow to load and I could only connect with the West, Florida, New York City, and Washington DC servers. I also struggled to unblock Netflix US — only the Chicago, East, New York City, and Washington DC servers worked. My speeds were slow and it took a few minutes for my streaming quality to improve to HD.

Screenshot of PIA connected to a US server with Stranger Things streaming on Netflix US
PIA isn’t the best VPN for Netflix US but it can unblock 5 other countries (like the UK and Canada)

However, PIA did easily unblock Netflix UK, Canada, Australia, France, and Japan. I could also successfully stream Disney+ (all US servers), Amazon Prime Video (all US and UK servers), and BBC iPlayer (all UK servers). In all these cases, my speeds were fast and I streamed in HD quality after only a few seconds of buffering.

If you’re looking for a premium VPN that offers full control over your privacy and security settings, then I highly recommend PIA. I suggest you try PIA with the 30-day money-back guarantee. You can always get a full refund as long as you cancel within 30 days. Don’t forget to check for active coupon codes as there are sometimes huge discounts of up to 76% off!

Try PIA for free for 30 days!

Best price $3.39/month (13-month subscription)

Try PrivateVPN for free for 30 days!

PrivateVPN is a high-performance VPN, although I was initially very skeptical about its small network of only 150+ servers. If a VPN has such a small server network, there’s a high chance of overcrowding (which means you face slower speeds) and not being able to unblock restricted websites consistently. But after testing PrivateVPN, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my initial assumptions were wrong.

You have the choice of over 7,000 individual IP addresses, so you don’t have to worry about any slowdown or server congestion. While it’d be nice to have more server options, I didn’t experience any speed or connection problems in my tests. In fact, I was actually quite impressed with the overall performance — the Toronto and Hong Kong servers even work in China!

PrivateVPN’s servers can also unblock Netflix in 19 countries, which is the most out of any VPN I’ve ever tested. This includes Netflix US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Brazil, and Sweden. I could stream the show Stranger Things in HD and it always loaded in 3 seconds or less.

PrivateVPN’s optimized servers can get around Netflix’s content blocks

There’s a full list of unblocked streaming services in the app. Just click “Choose Location” to access it — you’ll find popular sites like Hulu and HBO, as well as lesser-known options like Yle and SonyLiv.

Screenshot of PrivateVPN's Mac app showing list of optimized servers for streaming

PrivateVPN offers optimized servers for a wide range of streaming services

Torrenting is supported on the entire server network, so there’s no need to connect to specific servers. You’ll always be completely anonymous as PrivateVPN uses military-grade encryption standards and doesn’t log your online activity. To be extra safe, I recommend switching on IPv6 leak protection and the kill switch in the app’s “Connection Guard” tab. When I tested both features, I found zero leaks and the kill switch worked perfectly. However, I was disappointed to learn that the kill switch is only available on Android, Windows, and Mac. If you’ve got an iOS device, then you won’t have this feature.

I also found that PrivateVPN’s customer support team is slow compared to most premium VPNs. When I wanted to check some features, it took 5 minutes to speak to a representative even though I was first in the queue on live chat. It was lucky that I didn’t have any urgent technical issues! I had another question a few minutes later, but the live chat option had disappeared. I could only fill in an online form and wait for a reply via email (I received a detailed response 8 minutes later).

While I was impressed with PrivateVPN’s performance, it’s not quite ready to challenge the 5 VPNs above it. However, the best way to know if this is the right VPN for you is to test it yourself. Every subscription comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try PrivateVPN for 30 days without any risk. Formerly known as HideMyAss, HMA is a fast VPN packed with a lot of flashy features. Along with standard benefits like split tunneling and in-built leak protection, you can also use the “Smart Kill Switch”, “Lightning Connect”, and “IP Shuffle” features. Plus there are speciality servers for streaming and torrenting, which guarantees you a working connection each time.

The Smart Kill Switch is a unique feature that I haven’t seen with other VPNs. A regular kill switch ensures that no data is accidentally leaked when your connection to the VPN server drops. HMA’s Smart Kill Switch is offered on its Windows app, and you can choose to activate it for specific apps only (like qBittorrent). I also like the IP Shuffle feature, which I set to change my IP address every hour for greater anonymity and to avoid web trackers.

Screenshot of the HMA VPN app showing the IP Shuffle feature

IP Shuffle ensures no one can easily track your real IP address while you’re connected to the VPN

The streaming-optimized servers are available in the US, UK, and Germany, which is perfect for watching Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or BBC iPlayer. I tested HMA with Netflix as it’s the most tricky streaming service to unblock — and I could easily watch the show Stranger Things in HD quality on every server I tried.

I had no problems connecting to the torrenting servers in Europe, the UK, and US either. While my speed slightly dropped by 10% when I connected to a server nearly 6,000km away (New York), I was impressed with HMA’s fast speeds overall.

However, I’d like to see HMA invest more resources into its native apps outside of Windows and Android. I was disappointed that the Mac and iOS apps only offer the IKEv2/IPsec protocol — not OpenVPN, which is the most secure and popular option available on the market. There’s no kill switch on the iOS app either, which is a key security feature for any VPN.

You should also be aware that HMA keeps some connection logs. Your IP address, personal identity, and browsing history is completely private, but HMA does store connection dates and the amount of data used in a single VPN session. This data is used to monitor server capacity and is deleted after 35 days, so I don’t believe there’s any reason to be concerned. If you do have high-level privacy requirements, then I suggest NordVPN instead as it has a zero-logs policy and maximum security on all major devices (including Mac and iOS).

But if you’re an Android or Windows user, HMA offers excellent value for money as you’ll have unlimited access to its full range of premium features. You can test out HMA with the 30-day money-back guarantee and see whether it’s the right VPN for you — it’s completely risk-free if you change your mind later and want to cancel. Don’t forget to check for active coupons and deals to avoid paying full price on a subscription!

8. VyprVPN — Verified No-Logs VPN With Strong Commitment to Privacy

Quick Look: VyprVPN Results

Speed Average — Slow speeds when connected to servers far away
Security Advanced — AES-256-bit encryption, kill switch, and leak protection
Privacy Strict — Based in Switzerland (outside of 5/9/14 Eyes) with audited no-logs policy
Native apps for All main devices — Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Blackphone, Amazon Fire Stick, Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV
Proven to unblock Most major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, and more
Torrenting Supported — Torrenting supported on all servers
Customer support Quick response 24/7 via live chat and email
Device connections 5
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Minor cons No native Linux app
Doesn’t accept cryptocurrency payments
No kill switch on iOS, router, Amazon Fire Stick, Amazon Fire TV, and smart TV apps
Best price $5.00/month (1-year basic subscription)

Try VyprVPN for free for 30 days!

VyprVPN isn’t the fastest VPN I’ve tested, but it will keep your personal data private and secure. The strict no-logs policy has been verified and all servers are protected by military-grade encryption standards. This makes VyprVPN a safe option for browsing, torrenting (P2P activity is supported on every server), and unblocking streaming sites from abroad.

The most unique feature is its proprietary 256-bit Chameleon protocol, which was specifically designed to bypass censorship and firewalls. When connected using the Chameleon protocol, I could unblock US sites like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. I was especially happy to access Netflix as it employs the toughest restrictions for VPNs to overcome. I was able to watch the show Stranger Things in HD quality with less than 5 seconds of loading time.

Screenshot of VyprVPN streaming Stranger Things
VyprVPN’s Chameleon protocol connected to Netflix and got around the proxy error

When I ran speed tests using Ookla, I found my speeds dramatically slowed down when connected to far away servers in the US (almost 6,000km away). My server speed in the UK was 43.11Mbps, which dropped by 60% to 17Mbps on US servers. While this wasn’t an issue for me because my original internet speeds are extremely fast, VyprVPN might not be the best choice if you’re in a country with average or slow broadband speeds.

If you value privacy over speed, then you’ll be pleased to know that VyprVPN is a strict no-logs provider and its privacy policy has even been verified. The cybersecurity firm Leviathan Security performed an independent audit and confirmed that zero identifying data is tracked or collected. Along with ExpressVPN, VyprVPN is also one of the few services that responded to the Center for Democracy and Technology’s survey on VPN business models and privacy practices. I appreciate this high level of transparency with the public, which is quite rare to see in the industry.

Although I find ExpressVPN is a better option in terms of all-round performance, VyprVPN keeps you safe online for a much lower price of $2.50 each month. You can even save more money if you use the hidden discounts! Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, which gives you the opportunity to try VyprVPN completely without risk.

9. IPVanish — Robust Security Features and Good for Torrenting With Free SOCKS5 Proxy

Quick Look: IPVanish Results

Speed Good — Fast speeds for torrenting and casual browsing
Security Advanced — 256-bit AES encryption, kill switch, and leak protection
Privacy Strict — Based in the US (inside the 5/9/14 Eyes) with no-logs policy
Native apps for Most main devices — Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and Amazon Fire Stick
Proven to unblock Most major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer and more
Torrenting Supported — Every server supports torrenting and a SOCKS5 proxy is available for free
Customer support Fast response 24/7 via live chat, phone, email, and online form
Device connections 10
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Minor cons No cryptocurrency payment options
Can’t reliably unblock Netflix
No ad, malware, or tracker blocker
Best price $3.99/month (1-year subscription)

Try IPVanish for free for 30 days!

IPVanish is a solid option if you need a VPN for torrenting or want to enjoy greater privacy online. You’ll enjoy unlimited bandwidth and fast speeds, and your browsing activities will be encrypted and protected by the strict no-logs policy. However, if you need access to blocked content from abroad (especially streaming services like Netflix), I’d recommend NordVPN instead.

During my tests, I downloaded Bittorrent files using servers in Switzerland, Sweden, and Spain. My torrenting speeds were excellent and my connection remained steady. I also tested the free SOCKS5 proxy, which is included with every subscription. The proxy offers additional speed and anonymity, although it does leave your traffic unencrypted. I strongly recommend using it in combination with the VPN — it’ll lower the risk of getting hacked or infecting your device with viruses and malware.

Screenshot of IPVanish's free SOCKS5 proxy server credentials on the website

IPVanish is one of the few VPNs that offer a free SOCKS5 proxy for torrenters

All online activity is protected by AES 256-bit military-grade encryption and the strict no-logs policy. Even though the service is based in the US (and comes under the jurisdiction of the 5 Eyes intelligence network), none of your browsing history or personal data is ever tracked, collected, or logged. This ensures that even if the government demands user information, there’s nothing available for IPVanish to share.

But despite the fast speeds and strong security measures, this isn’t one of the best VPNs for streaming. When I tried to watch Netflix US, I switched servers twice before I could load the show Stranger Things (New York and Chicago failed, but Boston worked). If you’re looking for a VPN to unblock restricted content, I find it’s much easier and faster with NordVPN.

IPVanish’s prices are mid-range in the market, but you can use a coupon to save an enormous 73% off the full price! If you’re not sure about whether you want to commit to a subscription, you don’t have to decide immediately. It’s very easy to test out IPVanish with its 30-day money-back guarantee — you don’t even need to speak to anyone if you don’t want to continue. Just log in to your account on the website, cancel your subscription, and your refund will be automatically processed for you.

10. ZenMate — Low-Cost VPN With Basic Online Protection for Browsing, Streaming and Torrenting

Quick Look: ZenMate Results

Speed Average — Inconsistent speeds with some buffering and lagging
Security Advanced — AES 256-bit encryption, kill switch, and leak protection
Privacy Average — Based in Germany (inside the 5/9/14 Eyes) and keeps partial connection logs
Native apps for Most main devices — Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux
Proven to unblock Most major streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Fox Sport, and more
Torrenting Supported — Optimized torrenting servers for P2P file-sharing
Customer support Quick response 24/7 via live chat, online form, and email
Device connections Unlimited
Money-back guarantee 30 days
Minor cons Shares personal user data with parent company
No in-built ad blocker
No refunds if you pay with Bitcoin, PaysafeCard, or UKash
Best price $2.22/month (2-year subscription)

Try ZenMate for free for 30 days!

ZenMate originally built its popularity as a free VPN service and has since transitioned into a paid VPN. Although its performance isn’t as strong as the top-ranked VPNs on this list, the low price of only $2.22 per month offers very good value for money.

The main features are the optimized servers for streaming and torrenting, similar to CyberGhost. When I tested the streaming-optimized servers, it only took a few clicks tso connect but I’ve faster speeds with other VPNs on this list. In fact, I had to wait 5 minutes for the show Stranger Things to load in HD on the optimized-US server for Netflix.

Screenshot of ZenMate streaming Netflix Stranger Things
ZenMate can easily access Netflix US but expect slower streaming speeds

I had a better experience with the torrenting-optimized servers, as I could manually select a server with a low user count and server load percentage. This meant I could choose a server with less overcrowding (and subsequently faster speeds).

Unfortunately, my main concern is that ZenMate’s privacy policy isn’t the most robust. Some user data is shared with its parent company for marketing and technical purposes, including your name and email address. While none of your browsing activity is logged while you’re connected to the ZenMate, I recommend NordVPN instead if you’re seeking a more privacy-conscious service.

I’m still more than happy with ZenMate’s overall performance. Even though speeds are slower than other premium VPNs, I didn’t find this to be a deal-breaker — especially at a price of $2.22 every month. You might find an even better deal when you check for active coupons. The money-back guarantee applies to all plans, even if you have a discount, so it’s completely risk-free to sign up for ZenMate and test it out for 30 days.

Choosing the Best VPN: How I Ranked and Compared VPNs

1. Strong Security and Privacy Features

Every VPN on this list offers military-grade encryption and leak protection, which secures your internet traffic and prevents your real IP address from being exposed. I also checked each VPN’s privacy statements to ensure it has a strict no-logs policy, which means no third parties (not even the VPN itself) can track or collect your personal data. Some premium VPNs even offer additional features like a kill switch. This immediately blocks all internet traffic when you’re switching servers or if the VPN connection ever becomes unstable.

Stay safe online with the best VPN!

2. High-Speed Network of Global Servers

When a VPN has a large number of servers in global locations, the result is less congestion and overcrowding. This means you can connect to a server quickly and enjoy fast speeds — all without competing with hundreds of other users. That’s why I looked at each VPN’s server network size.

I also made sure that the VPNs have servers in multiple locations worldwide, making it more likely to have a server nearby. A shorter physical distance between your device and the VPN server ensures a fast connection speed. This is especially important if you enjoy data-intensive internet activities, like HD streaming, online gaming, and torrenting.

3. Unblocks Streaming Services Like Netflix, Disney+, and More

I checked that each VPN could unblock Netflix US (which is notoriously difficult to access) and that my streaming quality was in HD. If a VPN can unblock Netflix, then it’ll have no issues unblocking other streaming services like Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, ESPN+, and more.

4. Supports Torrenting and P2P File-Sharing

I ensured every VPN on this list allows torrenting and offers unlimited bandwidth, so you can upload and download as many files as you like. I also looked out for torrenting-friendly features, including optimized servers for P2P activity, SOCKS5 proxies for faster downloading speeds, and malware protection.

5. Works on all Major Devices and Operating Systems

If you’re like me, you’ll be connected to the internet on multiple devices at the same time. That’s why every VPN on this list is compatible with popular devices and operating systems. This includes Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, iPad, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Stick, Android TVs, Roku, Chromecast, smart TVs, game consoles, and routers.

FAQs on VPNs

🤩 What’s the best VPN for streaming Netflix?

I tested every VPN on this list and all of them work well with Netflix — but my top recommendations are NordVPN and ExpressVPN. I found these providers offer the most reliable servers for watching Netflix and the fastest speeds for streaming in HD. Both VPNs can also unblock Netflix in at least 10 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, and Japan.

Unfortunately, most VPNs don’t work with Netflix and you’ll get this annoying error message instead:

Pardon the interruption

You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy.

Error Code: M7111-5059

To bypass this Netflix unblocker or proxy error, it’s essential to get a quality VPN that can overcome Netflix’s blocks.

Watch Netflix with NordVPN!

😎 Are VPNs safe for torrenting?

Yes, a quality VPN will keep your personal data safe when torrenting.

Without a VPN, your IP address is exposed to many unwanted third parties. This includes fellow torrenters, your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and legal authorities — all of whom can track down your physical location and monitor your torrenting activity through your IP address. Your ISP could even throttle your bandwidth and slow down your connection if you’re downloading many large files in a short period of time.

When you use a VPN, your IP address and internet traffic is encrypted and hidden, so you can torrent as much as you like without any issues. Personally, I never start torrenting without first launching a VPN. My top preference for fast torrenting is CyberGhost as it offers optimized global servers for secure P2P activity. IPVanish is another top VPN for torrenting as it offers a SOCKS5 proxy for super fast torrenting speeds.

Torrent safely with CyberGhost!

🤑 What’s the best free VPN?

The best free VPNs are the “freemium” services like Windscribe and TunnelBear — but unfortunately, even the best free VPNs have serious limitations. While freemium VPNs offer a reliable and safe service, you’ll also encounter slow speeds, a restricted number of servers, and no access to streaming services like Netflix.

I wouldn’t trust any free VPN with no obvious downsides either. Free VPNs still need to make money, and shadier companies are known to sell your private data and browsing history to earn revenue. Worse still, many untrustworthy free VPNs often contain malware that infect your device and steal sensitive information, such as passwords, banking history, and private photos.

Take a look at Betternet VPN. This is a popular free VPN with over 10 million downloads — and yet it’s industry-wide knowledge that Betternet VPN is one of the most malware-infected VPNs available and secretly installs trackers onto its users’ devices. This lack of security and anonymity entirely defeats the point of having a VPN in the first place.

If you only need a VPN for a short time, the best free VPN is actually a premium VPN with a money-back guarantee. For instance, you can use NordVPN for 30 days for free with the 30-day money-back guarantee. NordVPN is currently the best VPN in the market, and you’ll get to enjoy access to every premium feature at zero cost. As soon as you’re finished with the service, you can easily get a refund by speaking to the customer support team.

I’ve even tested the money-back guarantee to check it works — and it did! Getting my money back was super simple as I just spoke to customer service over 24/7 live chat and my refund was processed immediately. Best of all, I got my money back in 5 business days.

🤓 What’s the best VPN for China?

Based on real-life tests conducted in China, the best VPN is ExpressVPN. It’s one of the few VPNs that can reliably overcome the Great Firewall of China and easily access blocked sites like Facebook, Google, Gmail, YouTube, Wikipedia, Netflix, and more.

Local authorities can’t see what you’re doing online either as ExpressVPN uses military-grade encryption standards to secure your internet traffic. In the event that you’ve got an unstable connection, there’s an automatic kill switch that ensures no unencrypted data is accidentally leaked online. The Chinese government is known for its strict online surveillance, so these security features are vital to securing your online privacy in China.

Just make sure you download ExpressVPN onto your device before you arrive in China. Once you’re inside the country, you’ll find it’s not available on the app store and the website is blocked. If you’re only going to China for a couple of weeks, you could even use the 30-day money-back guarantee to get ExpressVPN for free the whole time.

Get ExpressVPN for China!

How do VPNs work?

Short for Virtual Private Network, a VPN helps you stay anonymous and safe online. When you use a VPN, your internet traffic is sent through the VPN’s secure network of servers. The traffic is encrypted so no one can track you online — neither your Internet Service Provider (ISP), hackers, or the government can see what you’re doing.

The VPN also gives you a new Internet Protocol (IP) address. Your IP address contains your location information and lets websites and services see where you’re connecting from. When you connect to a VPN, you get a new IP address based on the server location. This way, you can use a VPN to get around censorship, firewalls, and location-specific restrictions.

For example, I’m currently in the UK. When I want to watch Netflix US, all I have to do is connect to a VPN’s server in the US. This not only gives me access to Netflix US, but every other site in the US (like Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, ESPN, and more).

How do I use a VPN?

It’s easy to use a VPN. After you’ve chosen the VPN you want, it’s as simple as signing up for a plan and downloading the software to your device.

  1. Get a VPN. NordVPN is the overall #1 VPN in 2020 for its excellent speeds and advanced security measures.
  2. Connect to a server.
  3. Start browsing the internet! Now you’ve got complete privacy and anonymity online.

How much is a VPN? Can I get a good cheap VPN?

You don’t have to pay premium prices to get a high-performance VPN (especially if you can find coupons or hidden deals!). While prices can vary between VPN providers, you’ll always get the best savings if you choose a long-term subscription. It often works out at just a few dollars every month, which is less than a cup of coffee!

Remember, every VPN on this list has a money-back guarantee so you can test it out for yourself without any risk.

Will a VPN slow down my device?

A VPN will slightly decrease the speed of your device (although there are a few things you can try to improve your speed). This happens because your connection is rerouted through a VPN server and encrypted, which takes longer to reach its destination. If you have more than 1 device connected to the VPN, this can also cause your speed to drop.

This is why it’s important to use a VPN that’s already fast — this ensures any speed changes will be negligible. NordVPN is the fastest VPN on this list, so I’ve never experienced a significant slowdown when browsing, streaming, and torrenting. Even when I connected 3 devices (my Windows laptop, iPhone XS, and iPad), the decrease in speed was barely noticeable.

To test speeds on your own device, you can try NordVPN for yourself using its 30-day money-back guarantee. It’s completely risk-free — if you don’t find NordVPN is fast enough for your needs, then you can easily get a refund.

Try NordVPN risk-free today!

Are VPNs legal?

It’s completely legal to use a VPN in most parts of the world, including the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. However, countries with internet surveillance or censorship tend to heavily regulate the use of VPNs. This includes China, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Iraq, Belarus, Iran, Russia, and more.

For example in China, it’s only legal to use government-approved VPN services. These VPNs will log your personal data and online activities, and share it with the government. Another example is the United Arab Emirates, where you can’t use a VPN to access content in other countries (like Netflix US). If caught, you could face a fine or even prison time — although the majority of VPN users in the UAE do so without any legal issues.

To be on the safe side, you should check the local laws regarding VPNs and only use a VPN for legal activities.

How can I get a VPN with no logs?

The best VPN with guaranteed zero logs is NordVPN. None of your connection times, session information, bandwidth usage, browsing history, IP addresses, or any other personal data is stored. To ensure your full anonymity, you can even create an account with a fake email address and pay with cryptocurrency.

You can also use ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Surshark, or any other no-logs VPN on this list. While HMA does keep some partial connection logs (i.e. date of connection and amount of data transmitted) to assist with its performance, none of the logs include identifying data. This means your online activity and personal data is secure and can’t be traced back to you.

Screenshot of HMA VPN (Hidemyass) and its no logging privacy policy

I carefully checked HMA’s privacy policy and it shows no identifying information is ever logged

Stay anonymous with NordVPN!

Can I use a proxy or Tor instead of a VPN?

If you value your online privacy, I strongly suggest you use a VPN (or combine Tor with a VPN). Both Tor and proxies send your internet traffic through a “middleman” server or node. While this does hide your original IP address, neither Tor nor proxy servers will encrypt your internet traffic and safeguard your personal data. Some proxies even keep logs of your online browsing activity.

When you use a VPN, your IP address remains hidden and all your internet traffic is encrypted. The best VPNs, like ExpressVPN, even have tried-and-tested no-logs policy so none of your browsing history or personal data is collected.

Stay safe online with ExpressVPN!

What’s the best VPN for my device?

The 10 best VPNs for 2020 work on all popular devices and operating systems, including Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and more. I’ve listed the top 3 VPN services below, as well as the native apps they have available.

If there’s no native app for your specific device (e.g. PlayStation or router), you can always manually install the VPN onto your router. This allows every internet-connected device in your household to access the full benefits of a VPN.
