PureVPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?
PureVPN Overview
You won’t find PureVPN ranking highly on most reviewers’ lists due to its data-sharing scandal in 2016. But after running extensive tests, I found many of its qualities are worth considering if you’re looking for an affordable VPN. Since its privacy policy breach years ago, it has made significant improvements, and I’d argue it deserves a second chance.
PureVPN keeps its streaming servers for major platforms working relatively well. It’s also fast enough for bandwidth-heavy activities like torrenting, even on distant servers. Plus, it’s easy to use and offers rare security features like Quantum-Resistant Encryption Keys.
However, PureVPN struggles in some areas — I noticed connection issues a few times, and a number of its servers are not suitable for online gaming due to high latency. It also lacks ad and malware blockers. For its price, PureVPN has a lot to offer, but its weaknesses may be a deal breaker for some.

PureVPN Works With Most Popular Streaming Platforms
Streaming with a VPN can be frustrating as many platforms block VPN IP addresses to prevent users from watching geo-blocked content. Sometimes, you have to try multiple servers to find one that hasn’t been blocked, even if you’re watching from your own region. To overcome this, PureVPN has ‘Shortcuts’ with servers dedicated to specific streaming services.
The aim is to help you pick the right server quickly. If streaming servers are available in your location for your favorite platforms, I recommend trying them first — according to my global teammates who performed streaming tests, they have the best success rate. However, not all of them work with the platforms they’re meant for.
Works With Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Max, and More
During tests, PureVPN’s streaming servers worked with Netflix, Hulu, Max, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, ARD, ITVx, Hotstar, Channel 5, Rai Play, and more.
Despite not making the cut as one of the best VPNs to watch Netflix US, our global team of testers found PureVPN has working IP addresses for Netflix libraries in:

For most of these libraries, like the UK and France, PureVPN has a dedicated server. However, PureVPN’s regular network also works with Netflix in some countries, like the Netherlands, giving you options if there are no Netflix servers in your country. But the dedicated servers were faster and helped stream without buffering.
PureVPN worked with Hulu on the first try with my US teammate’s account. Several other less-known VPNs usually struggle to avoid Hulu’s proxy detection. However, PureVPN worked reliably to watch episodes of Saturday Night Live without buffering.
On the macOS app, you’ll find Disney+ Shortcuts for multiple libraries, including the UK, Australia, and Canada. PureVPN didn’t have any issues working with any of them. The site loaded quickly during every test to watch The Mandalorian in UHD without any buffering or lag.
During tests, PureVPN also worked well with Amazon Prime Video without causing any buffering. My teammates were able to watch multiple seasons of the popular show, The Expanse.
In the past, PureVPN struggled to connect to Max. So I was excited to find out PureVPN now has a dedicated server in Shortcuts for Max that effortlessly connects you to your account with zero lag or buffering. My teammates could start streaming Game of Thrones in less than a minute after connecting to PureVPN.
After comparing the servers between devices, I also found that PureVPN’s macOS app has more streaming selections — the servers for Peacock TV, Bilibili, Amazon FreeVee, FrndlyTV, and others were unavailable on Windows.
However, you can manually add unlisted platforms. I tried adding a streaming service that’s popular in Malaysia and Singapore, and it worked.
Doesn’t Work With: 10 play and DAZN
Although it was successful with many major streaming services, PureVPN struggled with a few others, namely DAZN and 10 play. What surprised me is that even PureVPN’s optimized server for 10 play didn’t work and returned an error message. Still, it’s understandable since only a handful of VPNs work with this platform in Australia.
My teammates in several countries, including the US, UK, and Germany tried to access their DAZN accounts with PureVPN’s regular servers since it doesn’t have a shortcut. Unfortunately, none of them worked. CyberGhost is a better VPN with streaming servers that work with DAZN.

Speed — PureVPN Provides Fast Connections for All High-Bandwidth Activities
All PureVPN servers tested were fast enough to support activities like UHD streaming, torrenting, and browsing without lags.
Speed Test Results
I tested PureVPN’s servers in multiple locations using its default automatic protocol selection setting on a macOS device from Malaysia. My baseline speed without a VPN connection averaged 120.27Mbps. This was fast for all online activities, such as streaming and video calling.
Since PureVPN doesn’t have a server in Malaysia, I connected to the next nearest location in Singapore — less than 200 miles from me. I had hoped to stay above the 100Mbps range, but it dipped below that with a 24% loss. Still, PureVPN was more than 3 times faster than the 25Mbps required for streaming Netflix in UHD without buffering.
Since all VPNs become slower the further away a server is, I tested servers in other locations as well. Unsurprisingly, the farthest servers in New York (9,000+ miles from me) saw the biggest drop in speeds — 41%. But although Melbourne is nearer to me, PureVPN’s London servers were faster, so there’s a bit of inconsistency.
Is PureVPN Fast Enough for Gaming? Only With a Few Servers
Besides PureVPN’s speeds, I also tested its ping rate with Speedtest.net to make sure it’s suitable for competitive gaming. Ping measures latency, or how long it takes for your commands to manifest in the game as an action. It’s measured in milliseconds and the lower it is (below 100ms is needed), the better your gaming performance.
PureVPN’s macOS and Windows apps have built-in latency detectors. This is useful to see at a glance which server is the best to play without lag. It’s not turned on by default on macOS, so you have to activate it first in advanced settings.
My base ping rate was around 25ms, but it jumped to more than 40ms after connecting to a Singapore server. Since it was below 50ms, it was still great to play Call of Duty: Warzone, without any lags. Other servers within Southeast Asia also kept my latency within 50ms. But beyond that, with servers in Japan and Hong Kong, it went above 100ms and caused delays.
The latency results from Speedtest.net varied from PureVPN’s built-in tests, but I suspect the external tool is more accurate. This is because I could see the difference in my game’s performance. I also found some PureVPN virtual servers unsuitable for gaming — the latency in Vietnam servers, another nearby location, exceeded 400ms.
Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

Server Network — A Large Network of Dedicated and Virtual Servers
PureVPN has 6,000+ servers and 300,000 IP addresses across 65 countries. The company owns and operates all of its servers to provide the best experience for its customers. While you can’t select a specific city to connect to in every region, you can connect to individual cities in the following countries: Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US.
However, 20 locations are actually virtual servers that are located in the US. Virtual servers aren’t physically located in the country where the VPN lists its location — they’re only programmed to look like they are.
Almost every time I tried to connect to a virtual server, I had incredibly high latency. Even though the interface indicated that the servers had minimal traffic and were expected to be fast, I encountered difficulties loading DNSLeakTest.com or Speedtest.net when connected to the servers in Belize, Puerto Rico, and Bosnia.
Unfortunately, it’s not easy to tell which servers are physical and which are virtual. There are no indications on PureVPN’s desktop or mobile apps, and, since PureVPN’s rebrand, the list of virtual servers is missing from its website. Hopefully, this will be rectified soon, as it’s frustrating to connect to a server just to find latency is very high.
I was impressed to find PureVPN has a range of optimized streaming and torrenting servers. If you click the “Shortcuts” menu, you’ll find options that are preconfigured to connect you to the best server for popular streaming services. Once connected, PureVPN opens the streaming site in your browser, making it convenient to access popular content.
You can also create your own Shortcuts for easy access to your favorite websites. I set up a shortcut for YouTube in less than a minute, adding the YouTube URL and my preferred connection location. Once it was configured, I could simply click the YouTube shortcut to start watching videos from my favorite creators lag-free.
PureVPN’s P2P-optimized servers are available in more than 30 locations and can quickly be arranged by ping (or latency) so you can choose the fastest connection for your torrents.
Security Features
Top-Tier Encryption Levels
PureVPN uses AES-256-bit encryption as standard, the same level of encryption used by financial institutions and military bodies. In short, it’s the most secure encryption available and has never been hacked — it would take someone billions of years to brute-force crack it.
I was impressed by PureVPN’s Quantum-Resistant encryption, making it one of the top VPNs in 2024 for future-proofing your security. As cybersecurity attacks using quantum technology become more of a threat, PureVPN tackles this head-on by adding quantum-safe encryption keys, safeguarding your data against powerful threats in the future.
Multiple Secure Tunneling Protocols
PureVPN offers the WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPSec protocols in its apps. These protocols have different benefits, depending on what you’re using the VPN connection for:
- WireGuard — A lightweight protocol designed for blazing-fast speeds and top security — best for smooth streaming and online gaming.
- OpenVPN — Established and reliable, with 2 versions — UDP and TCP. UDP is faster but more likely to be flagged by networks, while TCP is slower with better security (ideal for P2P file-sharing).
- IKEv2/IPSec — Fast speeds and quick reconnections that are good for mobile users, but have a higher chance of being flagged or blocked by networks and firewalls.
Overall, WireGuard is the top choice for consistent speeds and high-level security. PureVPN will automatically select the best protocol for you, or you can manually choose a protocol in its Settings menu.
You also have the option to manually configure SSTP and L2TP/IPSec protocols with PureVPN, which aren’t natively available in the apps. You’ll find detailed setup guides on PureVPN’s support site if you want to use these connection protocols.
Automatic Kill Switch — Cuts Internet Access if VPN is Interrupted
All of PureVPN’s apps have an automatic kill switch, which cuts access to the internet if the VPN connection is interrupted. I tested the kill switch and was pleased to find it instantly stopped my internet connection to ensure my data wouldn’t be exposed.
Split Tunneling — Available on Windows and Android Apps
PureVPN’s split tunneling lets you pick which apps connect to the internet through the VPN, and which ones don’t. It’s great for multitasking — I used it while torrenting to protect my traffic with the encrypted connection while my email and work went through my regular WiFi connection.
Split tunneling can also give you a speed boost, as no unnecessary data is encrypted by the VPN. While it’s not compatible with PureVPN’s fastest protocol (WireGuard), you’ll find your speeds are still reliably fast.
Leak Protection — All Data Secured By the Encrypted Connection
Even when using military-grade encryption, there are ways for your data to leak. PureVPN uses data leak protection to secure your connection against IPv4, IPv6, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. I tested multiple servers in Europe, the UK, and the US to ensure my data wouldn’t be exposed, and PureVPN kept my data secure at all times.
None of my real information was visible, meaning PureVPN successfully prevented any data leaking.

A little under half of PureVPN’s servers support P2P connections, which is a good number of servers compared to other VPNs. However, there are noticeable gaps in P2P coverage. Some regions like Asia simply don’t have any nearby P2P servers available (the only P2P servers in Asia are Turkey, Russia, and Brunei).

Does PureVPN Work in China? Maybe
PureVPN might work in China, providing you manually configure it. When I contacted customer support about connecting in China, the agent gave me a list of servers and suggested I follow one of the setup guides available on its help website.
You also have the option to use TCP Listener software to connect to PureVPN from China. This open-source and free software connects to PureVPN’s servers specifically for customers in China. Once you have the TCP Listener software, live chat customer support can give you the addresses you need to access PureVPN’s list of servers.
Unfortunately, this is all pretty complicated for a regular user. If you’re looking for a VPN that works in China with no extra steps, it’s best to stick with a tried and tested VPN for China.

Getting started with PureVPN is incredibly easy and one of the most user-friendly processes I’ve experienced. It has impressive platform compatibility, so you can use PureVPN to secure all of your devices either directly or through your router. I also found the app interface intuitive to use and suitable for beginners and experienced VPN users.

PureVPN supports up to 10 simultaneous device connections, recently increasing its number of offered connections. This is a huge selling point, considering most VPNs only allow a handful of connections.
Device Compatibility — Works With Major Devices and Operating Systems
PureVPN is compatible with major operating systems like Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, Linux, and more. I didn’t have any issues when I tried it on my Windows and Android devices — as a Windows user primarily, I found PureVPN quick to set up and easy to use. I was also impressed to find PureVPN has a GUI for Linux, making it much easier to use.
You can protect every device on your network by installing PureVPN on your router. I got a colleague to try it on a Mac and it worked well too. It can also be configured on Chromecast, Roku, and game consoles, and it has detailed guides if you want to set up a VPN connection with your smart TV.
I was impressed by PureVPN’s Fire Stick apps, which are much more comprehensive than other VPNs I’ve tested. I could switch between protocols, activate split tunneling, and favorite the top servers for faster connections in the future.
In addition to native applications, PureVPN can be run using browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Though these extensions don’t offer as much coverage as the full application. The extension will protect your browser traffic, but it will not offer protection while using other applications.

Setting up PureVPN is easy and seamless. After you subscribe to the service, you get a step-by-step guide to setting up your account in a few clicks. Once I subscribed, PureVPN showed me different options to determine how I want to use the service. I could then choose from those options and get an optimized download.
When I clicked “Stream,” PureVPN downloaded a proxy extension to my compatible browser (I use Chrome). In the extension, I found optimized connections for various streaming services. Clicking on a service automatically connected to a server and opened the streaming service in a new browser window in seconds, so I could start streaming instantly.
For “Downloads,” PureVPN is pre-configured with the optimal tunneling protocol, server connections, and automatic kill switch. I didn’t have to make any manual configurations for the best torrenting experience.

I was pleased to find PureVPN’s mobile apps have a similar intuitive interface as its desktop apps. I downloaded the iOS app from the PureVPN website and it took just a couple of minutes to install and set up.
I like that the apps are easy to navigate, making it simple to choose a server (at country or city level) and connect. PureVPN’s mobile apps aren’t loaded with features, but I was pleased with the automatic kill switch, protocol selection, and option to run a basic speed test to ensure my connection was fast.
It was also always clear when I was connected, as there would be an icon in my notifications bar even when I exited the application. This lets me monitor my security in an unobtrusive way, especially when using my mobile device on public connections.

PureVPN offers 3 support options: 24/7 Live Chat, Email/Ticket Support, and Helpdesk Knowledge Base. Among these, 24/7 live chat support is the most convenient way to reach customer service.
There are two methods to access the live chat feature: either through the PureVPN support website or using the Support menu within the application. However, I encountered limitations with the chatbot on the support site, as it didn’t permit me to pose precise inquiries. This restriction contributed to a rather frustrating encounter.
On the other hand, connecting to live chat through the app was much easier as it directly connected me to a support agent. They promptly answered my queries and provided tailored recommendations based on my individual circumstances.
PureVPN’s Helpdesk Knowledge Base has lots of options for setup guides and FAQs, but navigating it can be tricky. For instance, I clicked on a “VPN Basics” article but was redirected to a broader overview of VPN tunneling protocols. However, using the Search function made it easier to find relevant articles for troubleshooting, billing, and more.
Unfortunately, I received no response from PureVPN’s email ticketing system despite sending multiple requests, leaving me frustrated and disappointed.
