iProVPN Review 2024: Before You Buy, Is It Worth It?
iProVPN Overview
iProVPN’s claims of top-notch security and privacy are ambitious. I tested it extensively across several categories to evaluate if iProVPN’s performance is comparable to other top names in the VPN industry. My findings will help you decide if iProVPN is worth it.
My tests confirm that iProVPN covers all the essentials of a good VPN. It offers robust security and privacy, works with most streaming platforms, and has user-friendly apps across popular platforms. However, its speeds can dip on distant servers.
Although it doesn’t offer a free trial, you can try iProVPN risk-free with its 30-day money-back guarantee. Overall, iProVPN is decent but can’t compete with top brands like ExpressVPN. You can try ExpressVPN confidently with its 30-day refund policy. Editor's Note: Transparency is one of our core values at WizCase, so you should know we are in the same ownership group as ExpressVPN. However, this does not affect our review process, as we adhere to a strict testing methodology.

iProVPN Works With Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer
In streaming tests, iProVPN worked with most platforms. You can stream on Netflix US (and most other libraries) and less popular sites like Peacock and Hotstar without getting detected by anti-VPN filters. iProVPN has special streaming servers in the US, UK, Italy, and India, though other locations work perfectly fine with most sites.
Works With: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Max, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer
During tests, iProVPN worked with Netflix US and UK for my teammates. They logged into their home libraries seamlessly and watched movies and shows without any buffering. iProVPN’s streaming servers delivered consistent speeds.
On Amazon Prime Video, the performance was equally reliable. iProVPN local servers connected swiftly, and I watched The Wheel of Time without buffering or quality drops. Although Amazon Prime Video always detects VPNs traffic, it didn’t with iProVPN.
iProVPN worked flawlessly with Max, Disney+, and Hulu for my international team of testers. None of them had buffering, server congestion, or any interruption during their streaming tests. In one instance, my US colleague mentioned that the Disney+ web page went blank after logging in. However, refreshing the page solved that issue.
iProVPN also works with other services, like ESPN, Crunchyroll, iTV, and more. Given its relatively modest network size, I was surprised how well iProVPN performed in streaming tests.
Editor’s note: While a VPN could hypothetically be used to stream geo-blocked content, doing so goes against every streaming platform’s terms of service and could be considered copyright infringement. My team and I don’t condone this activity.
Speed
- 7.0 / 10Provides High-Speed Connections
On average, iProVPN dipped my speeds by 38% on nearby, mid-range, and distant servers. These scores were just enough for data-intensive tasks like UHD streaming and torrenting — at least if you have fast internet. That said, if you’re looking for a VPN with minimal speed loss, I highly recommend ExpressVPN due to its excellent speed test results.
Speed Test Results
I normally use OpenVPN for running speed tests, as it’s widely available. However, it’s a bit code-heavy. To give iProVPN some advantage, I used the WireGuard protocol for speed tests. WireGuard has a leaner codebase that enables faster data transfers.
Download Speeds (Mbps) | Upload Speeds (Mbps) | Ping (ms) | |
Baseline metrics | 94 | 9.6 | 22 |
To run the speed test, I recorded my baseline download and upload speeds and ping. Next, I tested several iProVPN servers and recorded their corresponding speed and ping figures to evaluate the performance drops across distances. Here’s a compilation of my results:
Server | Distance (miles) |
Ping (ms) |
Downloads (Mbps) | Download Drop | Uploads (Mbps) | Upload Drop |
UK | 101 | 32 | 75.10 | 20% | 7.40 | 22% |
France | 312 | 43 | 71.50 | 24% | 5.90 | 38% |
Canada | 3,100 | 111 | 55.40 | 41% | 5.90 | 38% |
US | 4,300 | 127 | 66.30 | 30% | 6.90 | 28% |
Singapore | 6,800 | 274 | 52.30 | 44% | 1.50 | 84% |
Australia | 10,500 | 297 | 32.40 | 65% | 6.20 | 35% |
After analyzing the speed test results, I found that iProVPN reduced my download speeds between 6 to 7% every 1,000 miles. The only anomaly was the server in Montreal, where this figure spiked to 13%. This might be due to congestion or ongoing server maintenance.
The dips were significant on the most distant server in Australia, eating up almost two-thirds of my baseline speeds. I suggest using local, nearby, or at best, mid-range servers with iProVPN, especially if you have slow internet of 40Mbps or below. For consistent, excellent performance, you can try one of the best VPNs in 2024 from this list.
Is iProVPN Fast Enough for Gaming? Yes!
I played Mini Royale without frame drops with iProVPN’s local server. The 20% drop in download speed was hardly noticeable, and my ping stayed steady at 32ms. Ping is the round-trip travel time for data between you and the server. A low ping means more immersive gameplay.
My gameplay started lagging a lot after switching to a server in Sydney. There was at least a 1-second delay when my mouse clicks translated into gunshots in-game. My speeds had taken a 65% hit, and the ping shot up to 297ms — anything above 100ms isn’t suitable for gaming. I suggest using these top VPNs for playing data-intensive games like Call of Duty: Warzone.
Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.
Servers
- 6.0 / 10Server Network — Decent Coverage
iProVPN has servers in over 45 countries. While that’s comparably less extensive than other top VPNs in the market, iProVPN offers adequate global coverage. It has evenly distributed connections across the globe, so you’ll find a nearby location on every continent.
iProVPN has servers in major hubs like the US, UK, and Australia. Yet, it also covers traditionally underserved areas across Africa, South America, and Eastern Europe. I used servers in Mexico, Colombia, Bulgaria, and South Africa for streaming and casual browsing without any bandwidth or congestion issues.
All its servers support torrenting and are self-owned and managed. This removes the risk of third-party interference and data mishandling that comes with renting servers. iProVPN also uses RAM-only servers that use volatile memory instead of hard disks, ensuring they can’t store your data. In addition, it has specialty connections that include:
- Streaming servers — located in the US, UK, Italy, and India, these servers are specifically designed for lag-free streaming.
- Double VPN servers — in the UK (via the US) and Germany (via Belgium) route your data through 2 servers to double the encryption for extra security.
You can ask iProVPN to add a server by clicking the ‘Request a VPN Server Location’ on its website. It’ll ask your name, email, and a specific reason why you want a server in that particular location. This shows iProVPN’s commitment to expanding its network and adapting to changing demands.
With Smart Connect, iProVPN automatically finds the best server for you based on your location. As a result, you don’t have to scroll through the list manually and experiment with servers to try the best fit. For convenience, you can mark optimal servers as favorites for quick future access.
Overall, iProVPN’s network isn’t as extensive but ticks the necessary boxes. It offers global coverage, P2P support, and specialty connections for streaming and security. If you’re looking for more server options, consider CyberGhost because it has 11,670+ high-speed servers in 100 countries and specialty connections for streaming, torrenting, and gaming.
Security — Offers Military-Grade Protection Against Prying Eyes
For an affordable VPN, iProVPN has all the top-tier security and privacy features to protect you against snoopers. Here’s a list of what it includes:
- Military-grade encryption — uses a 256-bit cipher to turn your data into unreadable code, ensuring that it can’t be decrypted even if intercepted.
- Secure protocols — include WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, and PPTP, with an automatic protocol selector.
- Kill switch — cuts internet connectivity if the VPN server drops unexpectedly to prevent accidental data and IP address exposure.
- Split tunneling — lets you encrypt some apps and not others, so you can use the VPN with online banking without it interfering with local apps like Uber Eats or Tinder.
- Ad blocker — blocks unwanted ads from loading on web pages for safe browsing with faster load times.
- Double VPN — encrypts your traffic twice by routing it through 2 servers, providing extra security for sensitive tasks (though it can reduce speeds considerably).
- Malware protection — blocks malicious content and links to prevent your device from infections (it blocked malicious sites and downloads in my tests).
I tested for IP address, DNS, and WebRTC leaks using 20 servers — none of them leaked my data.
Overall, iProVPN has excellent security and privacy features to keep you anonymous online. Through hands-on testing, I confirmed that all of them work as advertised and aren’t just there for show. However, it lacks advanced features like obfuscated servers that disguise your data as regular traffic to get past network restrictions.
Privacy — Maintains a Strict No-Logs Policy
iProVPN is transparent about what little data it collects and has strict measures to safeguard your privacy. Importantly, it promises not to keep logs that could track your online activities, such as IP addresses or DNS queries.
To sign up, you need to provide your email address and payment details, which is standard practice in the industry. Other than that, iProVPN uses cookies to recognize users, remember preferences, and gather diagnostic data to enhance service quality.
With a strict no-logs policy, iProVPN doesn’t keep records of your IP address, DNS queries, connection timestamps, or session durations. It’s located in the privacy-friendly British Virgin Islands, which isn’t part of any data-sharing alliances nor has data retention laws.
The only caveat is that iProVPN’s no-logs policy hasn’t undergone an independent third-party audit yet. An audit verifies a VPN’s privacy claims; without it, you’ll have to take iProVPN’s word for it. However, the fact that it has a self-owned network and uses RAM-only servers shows that iProVPN takes your privacy seriously.
Torrenting — Supports Torrenting on All Servers
iProVPN supports torrenting on all its servers. However, I suggest using nearby servers to get the maximum speeds. I downloaded Night of the Living Dead, a 2.5GB copyright-free movie with 25 seeders, and recorded the upload and download times on nearby and distant servers.
Server Location | Download Time Without VPN | Download Time With VPN | % Drop in Download Time | Connection Stability |
London, UK (100 miles) | 4.5 minutes | 6.5 minutes | 44% | Excellent |
Miami, US (4,000+ miles) | 4.5 minutes | 9 minutes | 100% | Good |
Sydney, Australia (10,000+ miles) | 4.5 minutes | 14 minutes | 211% | Poor |
Even on a local server, it took 2 extra minutes to download the file. This wasn’t a big deal but the time difference would increase if you’re downloading large files. On distant servers in Miami and Sydney, the download time became double and triple, respectively. I also noticed that the download bar got stuck at times before resuming while using the server in Australia.
Overall, iProVPN is good for torrenting on nearby servers only. The delay in download times increases exponentially with server distance. However, you can expect safety and privacy when using iProVPN for P2P activities — just make sure you follow the copyright laws in your country and never download pirated content.
Does iProVPN Work in China? Maybe!
iProVPN doesn’t work in China because it lacks obfuscation technology, which hides the fact that you’re using a VPN. China’s firewall uses advanced surveillance techniques like Deep Packet Inspection to analyze your data packets. However, you can still get it to work by manually setting it up with the OpenVPN app, as confirmed by the live chat support.
While using unapproved VPNs in China is illegal, tourists haven’t been punished for using VPNs so far. The Chinese government focuses on blocking VPNs at the source instead of going after individuals. If you need a reliable VPN in China, consider these tried-and-tested VPNs that work in China.
User Experience
- 8.0 / 10Simultaneous Device Connections — Supports up to 10 Devices
iProVPN lets you protect up to 10 devices under a single account. If you find yourself needing more, you can easily add extra devices for just $4 each. However, it’s better to set up the VPN on your router. This lets you encrypt all your home devices at once, even those that don’t natively support a VPN.
I used iProVPN on 6 devices simultaneously without any glitches. However, I noticed some slowdown when I connected the next 2 devices — the server didn’t activate on the first try, and the connection took about 10 seconds. For zero hassle, you can try PIA with its unlimited simultaneous connections and works perfectly even on 10 devices at once.
Device Compatibility — User-Friendly and Supports All Major Platforms
iProVPN works with all popular operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. You can also use it on Amazon Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, and Chromebook. It offers extensions on Chrome and Firefox that work like a remote control for the main app. However, they only encrypt your browser traffic.
I liked having the servers neatly organized into ‘Countries,’ ‘Streaming,’ ‘Double VPN,’ and ‘Favorites’ tabs. Connecting to a server on iProVPN’s desktop apps took only a few clicks. It’d be better if the servers had more information like the distance and ping, as CyberGhost does. However, with the Smart Connect feature, it doesn’t really matter.
Its mobile apps are user-friendly but have some differences. Unlike the iOS app, the Android app has split tunneling and a search bar to find servers. Unfortunately, you won’t get a kill switch on Android. On its iOS app, iProVPN’s Smart Tunneling lets you access sensitive websites with encryption without the VPN running or activating split tunneling.
In summary, iProVPN’s compatibility and ease of use are on par with premium VPNs. However, contenders like CyberGhost let you set up a VPN connection on your smart TV. They also offer Smart DNS, which lets you use the VPN’s DNS server address on VPN-incompatible devices.
Ease of Setup & Installation — Beginner-Friendly Interface
You don’t need to be a tech wizard to use iProVPN. I downloaded its apps on my Windows PC, MacBook, iPhone, and Android tablet in under 10 minutes. When I first launched the app and connected to a server, I had to agree to iProVPN’s privacy policy and terms of use. The privacy policy mentioned that it doesn’t store any logs.
iProVPN’s app design makes it beginner-friendly. Besides having neatly organized server tabs on the home screen, tweaking settings like your protocol, kill switch, auto-connect, and auto-launch takes a few clicks.
My only reservation was that iProVPN’s desktop apps send you a lot of unnecessary pop-up notifications. You’ll get a pop-up every time you connect, disconnect, and switch a server while already using the VPN. Although I appreciate the intention, there should’ve been an option to turn off these notifications.

Support
- 9.0 / 10iProVPN’s support channels include live chat, email, and a ticket system. It also has a detailed FAQs and tutorials section containing blogs with the latest updates.
The easiest way to get support is via 24/7 live chat. I provided my name, email, and question in the live chat form and clicked ‘Start Chat.’ I connected to a support agent in under a minute and asked a few questions about iProVPN’s P2P servers. How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care
We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
Pricing
- 7.0 / 10iProVPN offers great overall value for money. You can choose from monthly, 1-year, or 2-year subscriptions, though there are some affordable monthly VPNs worth checking out. All iProVPN plans have the same features, and the only difference is the subscription duration.
You can pay for your iProVPN subscription via credit card, PayPal, or cryptocurrency. Although it doesn’t offer a free trial, you can try iProVPN risk-free with its 30-day money-back guarantee. I submitted my refund request via live chat and got reimbursed in a week.
iProVPN offers the following plans
Final Verdict
While iProVPN isn’t the best at everything, it’s a fairly well-rounded option and excellent for beginners. It has military-grade encryption, P2P support on all servers, and works well with popular streaming sites. However, speeds on distant servers can dip considerably. Despite its good coverage, iProVPN lacks split tunneling on some devices and obfuscated servers.
To get the best of everything, I highly recommend ExpressVPN. It has the fastest speeds across the industry due to its Lightway protocol and it’s a pioneer in quantum-resistant technology that can theoretically withstand quantum computer attacks. You can try ExpressVPN confidently as it’s backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

FAQs About iProVPN
Is iProVPN good?
Yes, it’s a good VPN overall. It offers military-grade protection, fast speeds on nearby servers, and a user-friendly interface. Despite its relatively small network, iProVPN works with most streaming services. However, I suggest you consider ExpressVPN if you want the best-of-everything package, especially if you’re in China.
Can I use iProVPN for free?
Unfortunately, iProVPN doesn’t offer a free trial. However, you can try iProVPN free for 30 days with its money-back guarantee. Just request a refund before the deadline expires, and you’ll be fully reimbursed.
If you prefer a VPN that you can use without committing upfront, then take a look at these reliable free VPNs. That said, I usually don’t recommend free VPNs, as most are unsafe. Even the safe ones on this list have constraints like data caps and limited servers.
Is iProVPN really safe?
Yes, iProVPN is safe. It offers military-grade encryption and a strict no-logs policy, ensuring your data stays private. Unlike ExpressVPN, its no-logs policy hasn’t been independently audited. However, iProVPN is safe as my virus scans on the desktop and Android apps didn’t detect any malware or malicious code.
