Steganos VPN is a very popular German-based software developing company since 1996. The company is expert in providing online security products including a password manager, an encryption bundle, and more importantly a recently released VPN service called “Steganos Online Shield”, but don’t get too fired up yet, Steganos VPN service is cut out for VPN beginners and amateurs rather than advanced VPN users for several reasons we’re going to mention as you read on, but first, let’s talk about the fringe benefits of Steganos VPN.
For starters, Steganos VPN doesn’t have restriction on either speed or bandwidth for premium subscriptions. You can get up to 5 simultaneous connections, WiFi protection as well as secure and anonymous browsing without ads, popups, or cyber threats. Other frills include erasing cookies and anti-tracking on social networks. There’s also a limited free trial offered (up to 500MB bandwidth limit) and cross-platform support for Windows, iOS, and Android backed by AES 256-bit encryption and solid protocols such as OpenVPN and IKEv2.
In addition, Steganos VPN doesn’t have key tools such as kill switch or DNS and IP leak protection. The server network is also unimpressive with an unknown number of servers in 15 countries concentrated in Europe and North America and as for speed, it’s not the best either. In fact, Steganos VPN observably slows down your Internet connection.
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.
Steganos VPN has servers in 15 countries.
With a hefty history in the online security business, we must say that we expected more from Steganos VPN, but as mentioned above, Steganos Online Shield VPN offers an ordinary software intended for ordinary users. Steganos VPN’s software app for Windows is a simple and basic one, but quite intuitive to a limited extent. It’s extremely easy to install and equally easy to use because it doesn’t showcase much anyway. On the left side panel, there’s a list of actions for what you want Steganos VPN to do for you like protecting your connection from hackers and blocking ads, surfing the web securely when connected to public WiFi networks, or accessing geo-blocked websites. On the right side, there are a few options with toggle buttons to customize your browsing experience such as ad-block and deleting cookies. However, if you’re looking for advanced VPN options such as kill switch, DNS/IP leak protection, customizing protocol settings, and adjusting configurations, there are none. While Germany is the default server location, you can easily choose your favorite server by clicking on the globe button.
We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
