There are several troublesome features and customer experience issues that make Cargo too problematic to be considered even in the top 50 VPNs. First, it is based in the USA, a Five Eyes nation that promotes spying and data sharing with partner governments. Furthermore, its minuscule one-day free trial is difficult to back out of and not nearly long enough to fully test the features and interface.
On the upside, this VPN unblocks geo-restrictions on Netflix and BBC iPlayer, but that’s about it. Otherwise, consider this VPN better for securing your data and not as a portal for streaming your favorite entertainment.
Overall, for the price point and the confusing terms of service and unreliable functionality of certain servers and security features, Cargo is not worth the hassle; especially if you have to contend with their virtually-nonexistent customer support. That, coupled with the fact that they admit to logging data, makes this a hard pass.
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.
Cargo VPN has 1,000 servers and 70 IP addresses/locations
The fact that this VPN is for Mac/iOS users only is a big drawback. Setup was mediocre but with above-average download speeds. Paying through iTunes is a big drawback as well because it does nothing to ensure your anonymity. Nor do they accept Bitcoin for subscription payment. The mobile app is fine but not rich in features. The ability to access entertainment services like Netflix depends on specific servers, which were not always working. We found the customer service experience wanting. It was slow, and when they did respond, they only addressed a few of our concerns and ignored the rest.
We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
