Viscosity Reviews and Expert Opinion - November 2019

What do we look at?

Viscosity Overview

Viscosity is a remarkable product — but it’s not a VPN.

Rather, it’s an OpenVPN client designed to help you with configuring a secure connection. It provides an intuitive interface for beginners who aren’t on a first-name basis with manual VPN setup.

Viscosity is especially useful is used at the same time as a VPN service that lacks dedicated apps for Windows/Mac. Compared to the native OpenVPN client, or other similar software (Tunnelblick, Stunnel), Viscosity stands out with a simple, yet feature-packed product. It’s suitable for casual users, experts, and corporate settings alike.

From smartcard support and proxy integration to IPv6 and advanced DNS compatibility, Viscosity has the essentials for advanced users to feel at home. If you’re indifferent to bells and whistles and just want a reliable client, Viscosity runs pretty much by itself.

Overall, this client is as clean as they get. But we’ll repeat ourselves — it’s not an actual VPN service. It doesn’t provide you with secure servers or encrypted connections. It allows you to load an OpenVPN configuration with ease, but you’ll still need a separate VPN service provider.

You don’t have to waste precious time with convoluted manual setups, thanks to the brilliant, affordable Viscosity client. You even get a free 30-day trial! We definitely recommend this stellar piece of software.

Pros

  • Provides a great GUI for when your VPN service doesn’t
  • Ideal for beginner, advanced, and professional users
  • Try free for a whole month

Cons

  • Not an actual VPN client

Speed8.0

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

User Experience8.2

Viscosity is trouble-free software in every aspect.

Installation is a straightforward process — download, install, run. That’s it.

The client looks and feels polished. Casual users will appreciate the readily-available connection info and the stats graph, while veterans will find a ton of settings to play around with.

SparkLabs (the team behind Viscosity) understands beginners may need some extra help, which is why there’s an exhaustive FAQ covering all the basics. The forum is a great source of info as well.

If you’d like personal assistance, you can contact customer support via email. However, keep in mind Viscosity staff won’t be able to help you with issues related to your VPN service — just the client.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
