SkyVPN Reviews and Expert Opinion - November 2019

What do we look at?

SkyVPN Overview

SkyVPN is a mostly free VPN that takes a different approach to a free VPN service. They also offer a bit more than you usually see in a free service, and while there is some room for improvement, SkyVPN could very well be one of the best free services available. But is the premium service worth paying for?
Still a relatively new VPN, SkyVPN first surfaced in 2016. The creating company is located in Hong Kong, and it continues to release the VPN in different languages while adding to its features and scope.
The main benefits of SkyVPN are pretty obvious: it’s free, and it offers a decent number of servers and locations. It also has an intuitive design that seems to be more geared towards novices and students.
SkyVPN offers several ways to earn additional bandwidth, including performing tasks, watching videos, or merely just opening the app each day. So, with only a few minutes each day, it’s easy to earn plenty of bandwidth for web browsing and light video viewing. There’s also the option for unlimited bandwidth via the low-price premium paid service.
As far as encryption goes, SkyVPN uses the best, offering 256-bit AES encryption alongside all the underlying protocols. The company is also very up-front about not keeping logs.
The main complaints about SkyVPN center around the low number of server countries and their dismal customer support. And the premium service is probably not worth even the low additional cost.
SkyVPN is a good choice for a free VPN that makes it easy to accrue more bandwidth as needed. However, they need to offer more features and server locations to justify a premium service charge.

Speed0.0

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

User Experience7.6

SkyVPN is geared towards novice users and students who need an easy way to bypass content restrictions. And you can definitely see this with the way the app is set up. The menu is clear, it is easy to switch servers, and options and settings are laid out in a simple format.
Customer support has a long way to go. There is no live chat option, and there are no user forums. The FAQ section doesn’t address troubleshooting, so your only option is to email SkyVPN.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
