How to get a Free Trial for Hide.me VPN (Tested November 2019)

Last Updated by Benjamin Walsh on June 02, 2019

Many VPNs offer a free trial, make it look irresistible, draw people in with a false promise, then catch you out. Companies can request you to use a credit card, purchase a subscription first, have hidden costs, or have an auto-renewal to charge you once the trial is over.

However, thankfully, with specific services like Hide.me VPN, this isn’t the caseInstead, they offer a completely free VPN with the option to subscribe to their premium service if you want.

Hide.me VPNYou don’t need a credit card to sign up, and you can remove your account whenever you want.

In this article, we’ll show you how to get the Hide.me free version, its limitations, a review of the VPN, and also some alternative VPNs.

How to get the Hide.me Free Version

Getting the free version is very straight forward. All you need to do is:

  1. Go to the Hide.me website.
  2. Click the pricing tab.
  3. Select the free version.
  4. Sign up using an email address and password.
  5. Go to your email and activate your account.
  6. Download the Hide.me app.
  7. Make your first server connection.

The setup process is straightforward and can be done by almost anybody. Just ensure you use an email address you have access to, and you choose a password that is difficult to guess but is memorable.
Once the app has downloaded, a pop-up window appears:

Note: the account type in the bottom left corner of the app will tell you the type of account you have. Make sure it says “Free.” The best thing about the free version of Hide.me is that you don’t need to pay anything, it is a “Life-Time Free VPN,” and there are no gimmicks.

However, there are some limitations to using the free version over their premium service.

Hide.me Free VPN Usage Limitations

1 Server Locations

One of the main disadvantages of using the free version is the reduction of accessible servers. With a premium subscription, you have 55 server locations to choose from, which is reduced to five on the free version.

These five servers include:

  • The US
  • Canada
  • The Netherlands
  • Singapore

2 Data Usage

Predictably, there’s a cap on data usage with the free version of Hide.me. You’re limited to just 2GB of data as opposed to the 75GB with the Plus subscription, and unlimited usage on the Premium service.

Luckily, the 2GB data limit resets after 30 days. So if you’re not looking to use your VPN often, you can get away with the data usage limits of the free version.

3 Connected devices

Lastly, Hide.me’s free version only allows one device to be connected to the account at the same time.

This may not be considered a limitation if you only intended for one person to use the account, but for those who want to ensure their entire family remains safe, one device is not ideal.

Hide.me VPN

Hide.me VPNIf you decide you want to subscribe to the full service, all those limitations will be lifted, and you can utilize the VPN to its full potential.

  • Speedy servers
  • 55 locations to choose from
  • AES 256-bit encryption
  • Inexpensive
  • Doesn’t unblock streaming sites
During our tests, we found the server speeds impressive. Across short and long distances, connection performance is excellent, and we had little issue bypassing geo-restrictions on specific sites. Sometimes, it felt like we weren’t using a VPN at all. Some servers were faster than others, with 55 available locations.

Security levels are high, with AES 256-bit encryption on all versions of Hide.me, so you don’t need to worry about hackers, snoopers, and other cybercriminals. The level of encryption is used by many major corporations and the US military and is yet to be cracked.

Pricing for this service is reasonable. If you want to subscribe monthly, the Plus option will cost €4.17 (around $4.69) per month, and the Premium option will cost you €5.42 (around $6.10) per month.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to access any major streaming sites, including Netflix, using Hide.me. Each site was able to identify that we were using a VPN and blocked access. Check out our article “Does Netflix work with Hide.me” for more information.

Finally, Hide.me does support torrenting, but not in all of their server locations. Their server locations page can give you more insight into which servers support torrenting. Note that Hide.me doesn’t condone illegal pirating in any way.

Alternatives to Hide.me

Although we like Hide.me, there are other VPN alternatives out there that can rival and even outmatch this VPN service as well as unblock those major streaming sites like Netflix.
