If you’re in a hurry, here’s the bottom line — You can get more servers globally, better VPN features, and 24/7 customer support with Surfshark for the same price or less. So why bother reading on?!
Rocket VPN is one of the newer VPNs around. It started as a free program but is now trying to make waves in the paid market as well. While the company is ambitious and seems to be aiming for simplicity and user-friendliness, they’ve still got some way to go.
This Irish company has been marketing their VPN since 2017. While the location isn’t ideal for a VPN vendor, most similar companies (in the U.K. and the U.S.) make up for it by being upfront about their privacy policies. While Rocket VPN claims privacy for its users, it offers few details and they are simply not strong enough in this area.
Rocket VPN has some strengths. The mobile app is very fast, and it occupies only a small amount of space on your phone or tablet. Navigation is easy, and going from server to server is fast.
As with many other details, Rocket VPN doesn’t state what kind of encryption it offers, but the protocols are clearly set out as being PPTP, L2TP, and OpenVPN.
Although Rocket VPN is a decent free VPN, the paid versions are not really worth the extra cost right now. The tiers are confusing, and the company does not adequately explain what sets each price tier apart. However, a nice inclusion is the mobile app feature that lets you choose which apps run through encryption.
Overall, Rocket VPN has some way to go. The company seems enthusiastic about internet privacy, and there is a good free version, but more features and more transparency are needed before this VPN becomes worth buying.
Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.
Rocket VPN has 10 servers in 10 countries and 10 IP addresses/locations.
We found Rocket VPN to be a breeze to download, install, and run. Once the app or program is up and running, choosing servers via the world map is easy.
Customer support needs some improvement. You can either fill out the contact form and wait for a response, or you can try using the live chat on the site. When we tried it, the chat operator replied in Russian to say that all support lines were busy. We gave up after not receiving a response for over an hour.
Before you make a final decision, we highly recommend you check out some alternative VPNs which may offer better features and prices.
We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
