ExpressVPN Keys Overview

ExpressVPN Keys is one of the newest password managers and comes from a highly renowned cybersecurity company. However, I was unsure if it could perform as well as the industry’s top password managers, so I extensively tested ExpressVPN Keys to see its effectiveness.

In my tests, I learned that ExpressVPN Keys has all the tools needed for safe and easy password management and is included with every ExpressVPN premium plan. However, it’s not the most feature-rich option and doesn’t have features like sharing, emergency access, and two-factor authentication for vaults, which you get with other top apps like Dashlane.

Overall, ExpressVPN Keys is a good choice if you want a simple and effective solution, but you should consider other top alternatives if you want the most feature-rich option. Also, you can try ExpressVPN Keys risk-free with the 30-day money-back guarantee.

Security

It’s missing two-factor authentication for vault access, but I was pleased with the protection ExpressVPN Keys provides for your sensitive data. It has a secure vault with AES 256-bit encryption to keep your data safe. Plus, there’s a neat recovery option you can use if you forget your master password.

Military-Grade Encryption — Airtight Security for All Vault Data

ExpressVPN Keys secures your vault’s data with AES 256-bit encryption. This is an unbreakable encryption standard used by the US military, banking, and the tech industry. I also like that encryption and decryption are handled locally, meaning hackers spying on your traffic can’t get access to your data.

Account Recovery — Helps Regain Access to Your Vault

Remembering your master password is critical, but ExpressVPN Keys provides a valuable recovery code in case you forget your password. This code is generated when you set up your vault for the first time, and it’s crucial to write it down or store it somewhere so it’s available whenever needed.

Remember to save your recovery code while setting up ExpressVPN Keys

If you forget to save your code during the setup, ExpressVPN Keys lets you reset the recovery code and generate a new one. Also, you can download the code as a PDF file that you can save in a safe place.

Overall, ExpressVPN Keys offers reliable safety for your data. It’s not the best app available for this purpose, though, as it’s missing features like two-factor authentication for vault access. However, its core security features will ensure your data remains safe and away from prying eyes.

Privacy — Independently Audited Password Manager With a Zero-Knowledge Architecture

ExpressVPN is one of the most trustworthy names in the cybersecurity space. So, it’s no surprise that ExpressVPN Keys is a privacy-focused password manager that’ll never compromise your information. It has a zero-knowledge architecture, meaning no one except you can see your vault’s contents.

ExpressVPN Keys have a privacy-focused design

Besides the privacy-focused design, ExpressVPN Keys’ mobile apps and browser extensions have cleared an independent audit by Cure53, which gives me even more confidence.

Features

While it’s impressive in terms of security, ExpressVPN Keys isn’t the best choice if you want a feature-packed password manager. It has all the basic tools that make up a good password manager, like auto-save and fill, password generation, and password auditing. However, it’s missing tools that other top password managers have, like passkey support, sharing, and more.

Simple and Secure Vault — Safe and Easy-To-Use Storage for All Sensitive Data

ExpressVPN Keys has a safe and easy-to-use vault that lets you safeguard your sensitive data. It supports website logins, credit/debit cards, and secure notes. In contrast, top password managers like 1Password offer storage for many data types, including SSH Keys, addresses, and more.

You can still safeguard unsupported data types by saving them as notes, but I would like to see proper support for other information added in the future.

Auto-Save and Auto-Fill — Save Lots of Time Logging Into Websites

ExpressVPN’s auto-save and auto-fill features worked seamlessly in my tests. I tested these functions across 10+ websites and never had an issue using them. The auto-save dialog automatically appeared when I logged into a website with information I hadn’t already saved. From the dialog, you can save your login with 1 click or use the information to update an existing login.

ExpressVPN Keys’ auto-save helps save logins easily

The auto-fill feature is equally effective, and the auto-fill dialog instantly appears when you open a login form you’ve previously saved credentials for. Even if it doesn’t appear automatically, pressing the key icon in the login form will bring up all the saved credentials for that particular website.

The auto-fill feature reliably worked across all websites I tested

Note that the auto-save feature in ExpressVPN only works on desktops via the browser extensions. I couldn’t use auto-save on the mobile app, as only the auto-fill option was available.

Import/Export — Allows You to Easily Switch Between Password Managers

If you’re migrating from another password manager, you’ll find it easy to import your logins into ExpressVPN Keys. It supports imports from browsers and top apps like Dashlane, 1Password, Bitwarden, and more. If ExpressVPN Keys doesn’t support your current password manager, it lets you manually import logins by making some changes to any exported .CSV file.

Exporting data using ExpressVPN Keys is just as easy. Navigate to the settings menu and choose the “Export data as CSV” option. This lets you download a .CSV file of all your saved credentials, which you can import to any other password manager for a smooth transition.

Password Generator — Generates Unbreakable Passwords to Use With Any Account

Password generators are a crucial part of any password manager, and ExpressVPN Keys provides a reliable password generator. With a single click, you can use this feature to create unbreakable passwords for all your accounts.

It’s simple to generate unbreakable passwords with ExpressVPN Keys

I also like that ExpressVPN Keys’ password generator lets you customize the passwords it creates. You can create up to 55-character-login passwords containing numbers, symbols, and upper/lowercase letters.

Two-Factor Authentication Codes — Generate 2FA Codes to Access All Your Accounts

While it doesn’t offer two-factor authentication for its own vault, ExpressVPN Keys can generate two-factor authentication codes for all your supported accounts, so it works as an “Authenticator App.” It’s also really easy to set this feature up. Select the “Set Up 2FA Verification Code” option and set it up via a setup key or a QR code.

Once you’ve set this information up, ExpressVPN Keys will automatically generate two-factor authentication codes for your accounts. This convenient feature ensures all the details needed to access your accounts are available within ExpressVPN Keys.

Password Health — Monitor and Improve Your Overall Password Safety

Password Health is ExpressVPN Keys’ auditing feature, and it’s a helpful tool to determine just how safe your passwords are. It’s not available in the browser extension, but it’s easy to access this feature in the mobile app. When you open it, ExpressVPN Keys analyzes your passwords and informs you about any weak, duplicate, or compromised credentials.

Password Health helps ensure your accounts are safe

The Password Health feature also informs you if you have accounts on unsafe websites and whether you need to enable two-factor authentication on supported accounts. Overall, it’s a reliable tool that ensures your accounts never have vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit to steal your passwords.

Overall, ExpressVPN Keys has multiple features for safe and convenient password management. It’s by no means the best app in this category, as it’s missing password sharing, passkey support, emergency access, and various other tools. However, it has all the basics to ensure your accounts stay secure.

Ease of Use

Setting up ExpressVPN Keys takes a bit more time than other password managers because of a few extra steps, like verifying your ExpressVPN account. However, I found that this is one of the most beginner-friendly password managers available once it’s up and running. The mobile apps and browser extensions have similarly intuitive designs, meaning you’ll have no trouble saving and using your passwords.

Note that you must be signed into the native ExpressVPN app on your device before using this password manager, or it won’t work. Also, I like that you can continue to use ExpressVPN Keys even if your ExpressVPN subscription expires.

Devices

There’s no standalone app, but ExpressVPN Keys has a reliable browser extension for desktops. You can easily get it from your browser’s web store and start using ExpressVPN Keys once you’ve verified your email. It has the password manager’s vault, password generator, auto-save/fill, and other vital features. However, I couldn’t find the Password Health feature in the extension.

ExpressVPN Keys’ mobile apps also have intuitive designs. The apps are available for Android and iOS, and both offer the same functionality. Also, they have the Password Health feature to audit your password security and help improve it.

It’s easy to navigate all the features in ExpressVPN Keys’ mobile app

You can even set the mobile apps up to use biometrics for vault access instead of your master password. For iOS, you can use Face ID, while Android users can use fingerprints. One thing missing from the mobile apps, though, is auto-save functionality.

Something I really like is that ExpressVPN Keys has no device limit. While the VPN only lets you connect 8 devices simultaneously, you can use ExpressVPN Keys on as many devices as you want to. All your information automatically syncs between devices, meaning it’s easy to have your passwords on all your devices if you use ExpressVPN Keys.

Support

This app has the same support team as ExpressVPN, so I wasn’t surprised to see that ExpressVPN Keys offers excellent customer support. You can get help via various channels whenever needed and always get quick responses to your questions.

Highly Responsive and Helpful 24/7 Live Chat

Live chat is the best way to get help with ExpressVPN Keys. You can contact an agent via the 24/7 live chat by clicking the chat button at the bottom-right of ExpressVPN’s support page.

During tests, I connected to a live chat agent in less than a minute. I asked several questions, and they quickly provided detailed answers. Also, I like that the agents provide links to relevant knowledge base articles containing more details to help with any question.

The 24/7 live chat is the fastest way to get help

Overall, ExpressVPN Keys’ live chat support is among the best available, and it’s the quickest way to get help if you’re facing any issues or just need information.

Impressive Email Support

Email support is usually slow, and it can often take up to a day to get an answer. However, ExpressVPN Keys’ email support was consistently impressive in my tests. I always get an answer to my query within 1 or 2 hours of my email. The responses were detailed and provided all the information I needed while including links to relevant knowledge-base articles.

Besides this, ExpressVPN Keys’ email support sends a follow-up after a few days to check if you are satisfied with the answers. You can easily ask any further queries you have through this follow-up mail.

Detailed Knowledge Base

In addition to the responsive support channels, ExpressVPN Keys has a thorough knowledge base with lots of helpful information. It has details about setting up the app, using the features, and other support articles that’ll help with most questions and basic troubleshooting.

The knowledge base has lots of helpful information about ExpressVPN Keys

I also like that the knowledge base has a search function, meaning you can easily find help regarding a specific issue by typing it into the search bar.

Overall, ExpressVPN Keys offers top-tier customer support that’s on the same level, if not better, than the best password managers. Whether you choose live chat, email support, or the knowledge base, you’ll always get the help you need.

Pricing

ExpressVPN Keys is included with any ExpressVPN subscription, but you can’t get it separately. So, it might not be the cheapest option if you only want a password manager. However, since ExpressVPN is one of the top VPNs available, the overall package provides great value for money.

ExpressVPN has monthly, 6-month, and yearly plans available, so there are many options to choose from. However, if you want the best overall value, you should get ExpressVPN’s 1-year + 3 months plan, which offers a 49% discount. So, you pay a reasonable price of just $6.67/month.

Money-Back Guarantee

There’s no free trial, but since ExpressVPN Keys comes with an ExpressVPN subscription, you get the same 1-year + 3 months-day money-back guarantee. This lets you try ExpressVPN Keys risk-free and see if it’s right for you. I also like that it’s a no-questions-asked money-back guarantee, meaning you can get a full refund without any explanation if you’re unsatisfied with the app.

When I checked the refund policy after my tests, live chat support instantly processed my refund, and I had the money back in my account just 4 days later.

Bottom Line

Overall, ExpressVPN Keys is a solid option if you want a safe, simple, and reliable password management solution. It comes from one of the trusted names in cybersecurity, and it has unbreakable encryption, a zero-knowledge architecture, and more to keep you safe.

Of course, it falls behind in terms of features. ExpressVPN Keys is missing password sharing, emergency access, file storage, and other features available in top alternatives like Dashlane and NordPass. So, you might want to consider alternatives if you want a feature-packed solution.

If you only have simple password management needs and need a safe and trustworthy solution, ExpressVPN Keys is worth getting. Best of all, you can try ExpressVPN Keys risk-free. It’s part of the ExpressVPN subscription, meaning you get the same 30-day money-back guarantee and can request a full refund if unsatisfied.
