Penguin Proxy VPN Reviews and Expert Opinion - November 2019

What do we look at?

Penguin Proxy VPN Overview

Penguin Proxy is a not a traditional VPN, but rather a P2P proxy. When using it, your encrypted data goes through the connections of other users on the service.
Currently in the “proof of concept” phase, and with future monetization relying on paid features rather than ads, Penguin Proxy is a free service that has some noteworthy aspects.
Based in the United States, the company started off in 2017 and is rather ambitious in its plans. For now, the P2P proxy service is great for unblocking content, and it provides anonymous browsing. Speeds are fair, and the client couldn’t be any simpler or self-explanatory.
All data passing through Penguin Proxy receives TLS encryption, but it only supports HTTP. The company currently keeps some logs of server requests (for debugging purposes), and these are deleted after two weeks.
Penguin Proxy has some obvious drawbacks that come with this type of service, mainly revolving around security. They recommend using the Tor browser, and of course, using strong antivirus and anti-malware programs on your computer.
With all that said, Penguin Proxy is definitely onto something, and they are getting more popular. This is as honest a free service as you’ll find, with lots of room to grow. If your security is in check, and you merely require anonymous browsing and content unblocking, it’s worth a try.

Why Most Speed Tests are Pointless & How We Correctly Test VPN Speeds

Speed determines how fast content uploads, so if you're torrenting or streaming, you want the speed to be somewhat identical to your regular internet speed. Since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes a bit longer to send your data back and forth, which can slow down your connection. However, if your ISP deliberately slows down your connection (also known as throttling) a VPN might increase your internet speed. Testing a VPN is somewhat pointless because new servers pop up and affect speed. Your speed can also differ according to your location, so your speed test might not match ours. Having said that, we tested the speed in numerous locations to provide you with the average.

User Experience7.6

Penguin Proxy goes from download to set-up, to up-and-running in just a minute or so. The interface is incredibly simple, with only one screen that has a few switches to toggle options on and off, including choosing a server and ad-block. That’s it.
Customer support is very responsive, even for a free service. You’ll receive a response in minutes, and if you visit the website, you’ll get live help via a small chat window. The site’s FAQ section offers troubleshooting information for all three platforms that the service currently works on.

How We Test Customer Support and Why Should You Care

We personally test the customer support team of every VPN we review. This means asking technical question through the live chat feature (where applicable) and measuring the response time for email questions. Whether you need to connect to a specific server, change your security protocol, or configure a VPN on your router, finding a VPN with quality customer support should be important to you.
